This model reproduces the action potential recorded experimentally for epicardial myocytes isolated from the adult rat left ventricle (Pandit et al. 2001).
Description
This model simulates action potential of the epicardial myocytes from the rat left ventricle. The model can be modified to also represent the action potential of the endocardial left ventricular myocytes of the rat as outlined below in the equations section and in the paper by Pandit et al. referred to below. The two versions were used in to support the hypothesis that smaller number and altered kinetics of the transient outward K+ channel can account for the longer action potential duration seen in endocardial myocytes. The longer action potential duration other novel emergent behavior such as enhanced amplitude of the sustained K+ current and a larger influx of Ca2+.
Equations

The equations for this model may be viewed by running the JSim model applet and clicking on the Source tab at the bottom left of JSim's Run Time graphical user interface. The equations are written in JSim's Mathematical Modeling Language (MML). See the Introduction to MML and the MML Reference Manual. Additional documentation for MML can be found by using the search option at the Physiome home page.
