Periodic airway transport and alveolus-capillary gas exchange.
Description
A homogeneous model for respiratory gas exchange is presented. It contains an alveolar sac (compartment) connected to a 1D airway (cylinder). The alveolar sac exchanges species with a capillary (cylinder) through a single layer. The model can predict time dependent airway concentration profiles in the presence of bidirectional air flow over a single or multiple breath time span. Source of species can be set either in air or in blood.
Equations
The equations for this model may be viewed by running the JSim model applet and clicking on the Source tab at the bottom left of JSim's Run Time graphical user interface. The equations are written in JSim's Mathematical Modeling Language (MML). See the Introduction to MML and the MML Reference Manual. Additional documentation for MML can be found by using the search option at the Physiome home page.
